The Dutch government aids entrepreneurs in different ways, from providing money to making it easier. If your idea meets the requirements for one of the subsidy programs you can apply to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) for a grant.
Subsidies are basically support from the government to certain industries or businesses which wouldn’t be a success without it. They are usually given to assist struggling sectors or encourage new innovations, or to promote a specific policy or social good. They may be successful economically but they will be costly to other groups (for instance food subsidies help farmers, while raising prices for consumers) However, they can also fail economically, yet achieve objectives in terms of culture and political.
Government-provided subsidy can take a variety of forms, such as grants and tax breaks, rebates, direct cash payments to suppliers or customers, and price controls. They may also be indirect, like road taxes that are paid by all motorists rather than just those who travel on the roads, or railway track access charges that are not levied exclusively for passenger trains.
Subsidy advocates argue that they can increase the effectiveness of an economy through safeguarding it from competition from abroad or by promoting local production. They can also help to counteract market failures, like externalities or information asymmetries. Some critics argue that these policies could have negative consequences, ranging from corruption to inequality and they can also hinder more efficient and equitable spending by the government. They also create perverse incentives. A company that receives government subsidy could be enticed by the prospect of donating to politicians. This could result in “regulatory capturing” and rent-seeking.
